Have you seen that epic episode of the Simpsons when Homer eats the atomic pepper and goes tripping literally and figuratively into the desert? You should if you haven’t, the animation is so awesome for the 90’s. Anyway, before eating the pepper he goes to the town’s chili cook off. While we were watching the scene (dubbed into Italian of course) Manu asked, “What’s chili?” And I couldn’t not make it right then and there. Plus we already had everything, even the beer. Homer would be proud.
[rainy day. perfect for chili]
Chili (not sure where I got the recipe)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 pound coarsely ground turkey breast
1 (12-ounce) can beer (such as Budweiser)
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 (8-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 (15-ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 cup (2 ounces) reduced-fat shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream for garnish
Heat oil in a large stock pot and add onion. Cook covered about 5 minutes until the onion is tender but not brown. Add the turkey breast and cook about 5 minutes. Add the beer and stir until liquid is almost absorbed, 5 minutes more. Stir in spices and both cans of tomatoes. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes or until mixture thickens. Stir in beans and cook 10 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Top each serving with cheese and a dollop of the sour cream.

YUMMMM!!
ReplyDeleteNothing better on a winter night! Looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteI have seen that episode and believe it or not we watched it in an anthropology class about popular culture's depiction of Native American religions (since it's really about peyote)--I love a good chili :)

ReplyDeleteLooks so good! I never thought to add beer to my chili. Something I will do next time I make it. It is perfect for a rainy day :)
ReplyDeleteIt's such a warm, comforting food!
ReplyDeleteI like the part where his mouth is on the fire and he's drinking all those beers and then goes to grab a candle and Ralph's like "wait mister, you don't want to get wax in your mouth do you?" and Homer goes "maybe I do son, maybe I do". Oh, Homer.
kt - you must have had a kickass anthro professor! now that i think of it, the talking wolf (or was it a dog?) was rather native american-esque. and the turtle!
ReplyDeletejillian - it's basically the only italian tv i watch because of the dubbed voices. hilar.
