a confession

I like to think that I have an eclectic taste in music. I was probably the only middle schooler with a passion for Miles Davis, Serge Gainsbourg and The Specials. But I also totally bought TLC’s CrazySexyCool when it came out and wore out my Hootie and the Blowfish tape. I pretty much adored anything and everything my musical family threw at me. In college I was all about the broody, introspective lyricists and even while studying abroad my tastes were rocked by the new world beats I was discovering.

So you’ll be shocked when you read what I am about to tell you.

Being an expat has made me like, love even, really bad music. I love it simply because it’s American, simply because I heard it in my youth, simply because it’s in English.

I know that’s subjective and all, but trust me, when you find yourself in the car blasting Nickelback, you realize that you’ve hit a low point.

Being an expat takes everything you thought you were and jumbles it up in a shake n’ bake of cultural confusion until you find yourself yelling at some random guy in a bar because he says he doesn’t like BeyoncĂ©. And it’s not even like you adore her, you like her, but just because she’s American you feel like you have to protect her. (Getting in that fight was another low point. Not as low as the Nickelback thing, but still, pretty low.)

[circa 2008, as a pre-expat.]

So hit me with all the “bad,” super pop, mainstream, synthesized, produced hits that are big in America right now, so that I can make a cd of them and blast them in the car. Because the other day the Ketchup Song came on, and I listened to the whole thing. The whole thing, people! I thank you in advance, and hope that you won’t judge me for the Nickelback. (Even I am still judging me for that!)

  1. hah...I've always liked really terrible music. I'd like to think of it as my only downfall ;)

  2. expatlife has made me love horrible american pop music, and I am only a little bit ashamed about it. Although come to think of it, I can probably blame Andreas since he loves the pop music and the radio which plays said pop music. and I have also come to love some really terrible (and a bit annoying when played sans beer in hand) German Karnival music.

  3. Lol! Hilarious post! Being an expat myself I TOTALLY understand you and know exactly what you mean. You'd be hard pressed to find me watching hockey when at home (Toronto) but all of a sudden here in India - I'm all "Sid the Kid" and schooling people (though I know very little) on Canada's hockey history. Lol. Too funny!

  4. What the hell is the Ketchup Song? Before you respond to me, remember I live in a very very remote island, with no TV, no radio, just nothing ;)

  7. Oh goodness, I don't how to feel about this post...but I guess, sometimes, bad American music makes you feel less homesick? I know that while I was in Paris, I made sporadic trips to McDonalds, just because I needed a taste of home. So no, I don't think I judge :)

And yes to Katy Perry! I love that girl.

    xoxo,
    Joelle

  8. Haha I can totally relate to this post - I feel the same! I get days where I try and cling to anything at all which could possibly remind of home - even if that means I wind up listening to cheesy American pop music :)

  9. The boyfriend said the same thing about his time as an ex pat. It's how he knows all the words to Britney and Backstreet Boys circa 2001.

I love cheesy pop and cheesy hip hop. Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and LMFAO are all pretty big right now and are constantly being played on the radio.

  10. Ooo... Nickelback?! Tut, tut! I did download one of their songs a few months ago :) I've been a fan of Hanson ever since Mmm Bop came out in '97. I was in seventh grade :) I'm still totally in love with them... they write their own music and are totally down to earth. I will see them in a little concert one day (& lets be clear, I don't think they have bad music!)

I also feel 'motherly' towards Justin Bieber because he is a good kid and does a lot of great things for charities. xx

  11. Oh, Nickelback....

Ummm, you need some Selena Gomez on your CD! I totally don't like that style of music and I love her newest CD, I can't get enough of it!

  12. I literally laughed out loud at the Nickleback comment. You poor thing. I wish I could help, but my local radio station is terrible. They play one song that was new 6 months ago, then a Nickleback song, then a 30 minute commercial break.

  13. Thank you for your honesty. I really appreciate you coming clean with your readers and because of that I've decided to continue reading your blog ;) Now, about that Ketchup song, I only know it in Spanish, it's also in English?

It's a little too techno-y to really get into but I never turn it off.
