Did you know that being an expat has opened my eyes and given me a newfound appreciation for Americana? Oh, who am I kidding - it’s downright freakish. I sing the Star Spangled Banner in the shower and give a little “eep!” when I see someone sporting a Celtics t-shirt or American flag-patterned Converse.
And now it’s been almost seven months since I’ve stepped on American soil and I’m craving two things that Americans love: a challenge and pancakes. I have a dozen and one pancake recipes and it’s time to take them out for a test drive - with or without syrup, that as we know, costs an arm and a leg here. But this is America! We find a solution!
First up is this newfangled Bisquick Shake 'n Pour - just add water! (It was a going away present from my darling Liz.) So I added and I shook and I poured those babies out onto my griddle. They bubbled up and flipped like fluffy little clouds and, surprisingly, were perfectly pancake -looking.
The Shake 'n Pour made about 6 pancakes, and yes, I ate them all. (It's what happens when you haven't had pancakes in 7 months, it's medically proven.) Here's my review:
Pancake recipe: Bisquick Shake 'n Pour
Taste: Somewhat bland, and you could really taste the flour.
Texture: Very fluffy and very light.
Esthetics: Beautifully golden and crisp.
Manageability: Easy. I mean, all I had to do was shake 'n pour.
And since we're on the topic of America, (pronounced Amerricuhh!) I have to share with you the package I received yesterday in the mail. Zoe is a goddess. She sent me girl scout cookies! I screamed when I opened them and memories of going to girl scouts just for the snacks came flooding back to me. THANK YOU ZOE!
If you think you have the perfect pancake recipe, send it along so I can include it in the challenge!
