mango soda

When I was little, I had some pretty distinct food obsessions. Wheaties, Puffed Rice (why?), tortellini salad from a little cafè downtown, chicken wings, salami and mayo sandwiches that you had to flatten with your hand first before I would eat them, jelly donuts and Clearly Canadian. Yes, the sparkling, flavored waters were my drug since we never had actual soda in the house. Recently while out to lunch, I was thoroughly reminded of those days with the amazing Spindrift soda made with fresh fruit purèes and sparkling water. I had to try to recreate it.

Mango Soda
1 mango
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 liter sparkling water
Peel mango by slicing an X at the top with a knife and peeling skin back. If it's super ripe, this may be difficult, so you can peel with a knife directly. Slice fruit from pit and purèe in a blender with the sugar and lime juice. Add to the sparkling water in a pitcher, serve.

What were your childhood food obsessions? (I'm already excited for these responses. :) Buon weekend my friends!

I loved eating mayo and lettuce sandwiches as a kid!  I also liked peanut butter and chocolate chip sandwiches!  My husband has not found good mangoes in the states yet (nothing like what he had in Abu Dhabi) so maybe you can share where you bought your mango! :)  This recipe looks so good! xx

  10. haha mayo and lettuce! we got our mango at the supermarket but my trick is to let all of my fruit ripen in a paper bag for at least a few days before i eat it. tastes so much better!

  12. Mashed potatoes were (and still are) one of my favorite foods, so homey and delicious. I was also a huge fan of clearly Canadian, something about those blue bottles made me feel so grown up and chic! I was also slightly obsessed with chicken fingers ordering them everywhere we went out to eat and of course cheese, I loved all varieties of this dairy filled delight until I learned I was lactose intolerant last year... oh well I'm just glad I enjoyed it while I could

Love this! Looks so good and refreshing (and I love mango!)

Mac and cheese. Definitely. Actually, it's still an obsession. Growing up, my dad was crazy lactose intolerant, so I almost never got mac and cheese unless it was at a church potluck or a friend's house. And you better believe I INHALED the stuff when it was around!

  15. haha! it's so funny, because i bet if my mom gave me all the mac and cheese and lucky charms i wanted as a kid, i probably wouldn't want it. but just because i couldn't have it, i neeeeded it. which mac and cheese did you eat? i loved the annie's shells!

Lots of cheeses are lactose free, at least a lot of dutch cheeses are. And there are pills you can take withe the enzyme you miss.
