Although it feels like ages, only a week has gone by since my return to life in Barletta and our new place. We’re still getting settled, slowly but surely, but have yet to make the trek to IKEA for the necessary items we’re missing. (Manu is obsessed with the fact that we still don’t have a tablecloth. Italians and their tablecloths I tell ya!)
The week was filled with getting acquainted with the neighborhood and the characters that inhabit it, finding internet, starting lessons and beating a cold that everyone says is due to my lack of neck coverage. Ah, it’s good to be back.
This morning while walking downstairs the little old lady on the second floor stopped me to chat. She was the cutest and held my hands tight the whole time we talked. She had those warm, soft, old lady hands that make you feel instantly cozy. As I left she told me that anytime I need anything, “flour, sugar!” I should ring her bell. As I said, the cutest.
The view from our bedroom balcony looking down is just what I want to see when I wake up. Buon giorno, yellow melons, pears, plums, kiwis, peaches, apples and grapes!

Thank you. Looking at my middle-aged hands makes me sad because they are no longer young, like the rest of me. But someday, they will become "warm, soft, old lady hands," and maybe someone will find them comforting, even if they are long since beautiful, maybe too, the rest of me.
ReplyDeleteUGH that old lady sounds ADORABLE. i can just picture it! when i w went to italy when i was 15, we went to cinque terre, a whole gaggle of high school students. and as we walked down this rocky hill, an old man waited at the bottom and KISSED every single of us. so cute. so italian!
ReplyDeletelove that stripped awning + fruit. so picture-esq. im happy that you have friendly neighbors too! the one on the 2nd floor sounds like the sweetest. xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams

I can't even tell you how I just cried missing my Nana whose hands were just like that, aged from molding gnocchi and how she heated them at the stove, perpetually cold even in summer. Your new home sounds so lovely, reading your blog really makes me miss my Sicilian family.
ReplyDeletethank you! it's been fun settling in, aside from the actual unpacking part! :)
ReplyDeleteoh how sweet! i can just picture her, sounds like my Nana. :) i'm glad i could bring you some nostalgia, laura, and thanks for reading!
