Six years ago today I was in college studying abroad and falling in love with not just Italy, but Manu too. Looking back on some old journals recently, I found an excerpt of the absolute inner turmoil I was facing then, knowing that soon I had to go back to the states, finish college, and maybe never see Manu again. If only my 21-year-old-self knew what I knew now...
“It was early morning when we started to head back to the dorms from the all-night citywide party. Manu found an abandoned shopping cart and was having so much fun pushing people in it. When we got to the stretch of road where you see only mountains, he sat all curled up in the cart, eyes closed, with his friend pushing, his head tilted back and laughing, “Hey Mari! Everything is bellissimo! The air! The dawn! The sun! BELLISSIMO!” I couldn’t help it, I started crying. I looked out and saw the sun and the air and the dawn and it was bellissimo. It made me realize that here, I found someone who appreciates life and loves people and makes me happy and loves me for real and wants to marry me....What am I going to do?”

Manu, here’s to another six (and many more) years together pushing that proverbial shopping cart on a sunny day, laughing and loving life.
